34 to 35 Weeks

I've just noticed that the last weekly guide was for 33 weeks! I better catch up quick eh?

34 Weeks

Your baby now weighs more than 4.7 pounds / 2.2 kilograms and is 18 inches / over 45 centimetres from top to toe. She's filling out and getting rounder -- she'll need her fat layers later to regulate her body temperature.

If you don't already talk to your baby, this is a good time to start -- at 35 weeks her hearing is fully developed. Don't feel ridiculous if you're already chatting in baby talk. Some evidence shows that newborns pay closer attention to high-pitched tones.

If you've been nervous about going into premature labour, you'll be happy to know that 99 per cent of babies born at week 35 can survive outside the womb -- and most have no major problems. Although your baby's central nervous system is still maturing, her lungs are nearly fully developed by now.

Many women start to notice a tingling sensation or numbness in the pelvic region or pain as they walk. This may be caused by the pelvic joints loosening, ready for labour.

35 Weeks

Your baby now weighs about 5.25 pounds/ 2.4 kilograms and measures approximately 18 inches/ 45 centimetres from head to toe. His elbow, foot or head may protrude from your stomach when he stretches and squirms about. Soon, as the wall of your uterus and your abdomen stretch thinner and let in more light, your baby will begin to develop daily activity cycles.

This week, your little one is now sporting fingernails and has a fully developed pair of kidneys. His liver can also process some waste products.

There's much less amniotic fluid and much more baby in your uterus, which has expanded to a thousand times its original size. You've probably put on between 25 and 30 pounds/ 11 and 13.6 kilograms and your weight gain has hit its peak. Even your belly button has got bigger and has popped outward. You may be feeling breathless now that the top of your uterus is up under your ribs. Try getting down on all fours to take deeper breaths. Although the pressure on your bladder will make the bathroom your second home, don't drink any less water -- your baby needs the fluids. But you may like to cut down on diuretic drinks like tea and coffee, which will make you have to urinate even more often.

All Clear!

The Gestational Diabetes test came back clear - Yay!

At least that means that my date for the section will stay the same and to be honest that's a relief. Any earlier and I'd have had the baby by now!

Back soon...

Gestational Diabetes Test...

So I've just got home from the hospital and I'm enjoying a well earned cup of tea and some Jammie Dodgers! I know it sounds strange to be shovelling in some sticky, biscuity goodness when I've been for a diabetes test, but I've been fasting since last night for this procedure - so they're medicinal Jammie Dodgers honest!

Anyway... Back to the test...

My appointment was at 8.30am and after my bloods were taken, I had to drink a sugary solution that would work it's way through my system (I nicknamed said liquid 'the yellow goo') - It wasn't horrible though, quite tasty really!

Then... After a two hour wait, I had more bloods taken to show how the solution had reacted in my body - Job done!

Finally I was allowed to eat! I was SOOO hungry and so was junior, he was kicking me like mad and it felt like I had fought fifteen rounds with Mike Tyson. This baby likes his food and knows when breakfast time is! After not eating since last night and just sipping water, I was so glad for a snack and a cup of tea afterward. It was like nectar!

Now I just have to wait until 3.30pm and I can call the hospital for the results...

Special thanks and gold stars go to Sister Sue Evans today. Sue took care of me from start to finish and as well as being fantastic at her job, she's bubbly and friendly to boot - I didn't feel a needle going in once!

I'm telling you, this woman never stops and is the first to reassure patients, answer questions or just have a friendly chat to put you at ease. She's a real credit to the NHS and should get a raise!

Thanks Sue!

I'll be back soon with the results. I hope things work out and they're negative, otherwise I have to let my consultant know and he's going to review my cesarean date again. Cross your fingers...

Tests, Tests and Tests...

Sunday (5th May)

Nil by mouth tonight and then two days of tests. I'll be here between needles and scans to give you an update. Cross your fingers...

Monday (6th May)

OMG - The baby is officially enormous! I've just got back from the measuring/placenta scans and from what they found - He's a whopper!

The good news is that I finally have all the answers that I need. I managed to see my own consultant this time around and as always he was fab, no stone unturned and no questions left for me. He even booked my C-section, so I can start to prepare for that too.

Thankfully, my section will be much earlier than my initial due date. There is NO way I could have lasted that long (I knew that just from how I felt) - But the measuring scan has shown that junior is pretty much full term (sizewise), so the section date needs pulling back. I just knew I had a little bruiser in there - Bless him.

I tell you what, I'm glad I didn't buy any newborn clothes... They wouldn't last two minutes!

Baby could be here by the start of next month!

As far as the placenta scan goes, the position has changed and it's no longer classed as low (yay!)
Me being me, my body has a mind of its own... So it's not low, but it's moved to the front which can hinder a cesarean. Good eh!

Gestational Diabetes tests tomorrow... See you then.

33 Weeks

You are now 33 weeks pregnant, which is the beginning of week 34. Your baby weighs about 2.1kg (2,100 grams or approximately 4 lbs 10 ozs) and measures about 45 cm in length (or 17.75 inches). They are now fully formed physically and have a firm grasp reflex. During the last 6 weeks, your baby's main task is to gain weight and grow a little larger, as well as build up their immune system, which is obtained from their mother as antibodies passed through the placenta.

Most babies assume a 'head down' position around this time and stay this way until they are born. You may notice your baby's movements changing in character (to be more 'stretches' and 'squirms') as they grow larger and there is comparatively less room for them to move. Your caregiver may offer you the use of kick chart, if you have concerns about your baby's activity.

Your baby can now determine the difference between sweet and sour tastes. Premature babies as early as 33 weeks have been observed to suck harder on a teat dipped in glucose! However, unborn babies can also detect subtle changes in the 'flavour' of the amniotic fluid surrounding them. It is believed the fluid acts as a type of "flavour bridge" to their mother's breast milk, which also carries different food flavours from the mother's diet.

Hi there, I have just had a baby who is now over 9 wks old.
He measured large for the whole pregnancy - I was tested about four times in four different ways for diabetes - thankfully I was clear every time but the docs wouldn't believe there wasn't something wrong and that he was just big.
Well - guess what? He was just big!
He weighed 10lbs 8oz and I felt every ounce of him coming out!

So take heart - maybe you just have a big baby like me. (And he was my first too)

Good luck!

Thanks so much Alice, it's great to hear from someone who has been through this and you have really helped put my mind at rest. Fingers crossed that the tests come out clear and I end up like you, with a beautiful bonny baby! I suppose it's my just desserts, I've always said I didn't want to have a fragile little one, I love those little chubby babies with the roly-poly ankles. Thanks again for your support, please feel free to keep commenting on the blog and post any hints and tips you may have. I'm always on the lookout for help and advice - Hugs Selena x

It Was All Going So Well...

Yesterday was a rough day from the start...

I didn't sleep well and left for the hospital with a flea in my ear because I was tired. Once again I had my list of questions so I could complete my birth plan and I was hoping for confirmation of the date of my cesarean. Unfortunately I was again 'bumped' to the nearest available obstetrician, rather than being able to see MY consultant (even though MY consultant was also in the clinic!) - Grrrr!

There is nothing worse than a receptionist who takes not a blind bit of notice when you request to see your own consultant!

Double Grrr!

To top it off, my appointment didn't go to plan either.
The doctor I saw was lovely, but unfortunately he knew little of my situation and could only answer a few of my questions - He said I should discuss my birth plan and cesarean date with my own consultant (which I know!) - That's why I asked to see MY own consultant at reception, because I was told the same thing last month by the other 'stand in' doctor I saw. Aaaagghhh! No wonder poor pregnant mums get so frustrated! If I don't mind waiting to see my own doctor, why can't I see him!

Now where was I? Yes, so the doctor I saw was actually very good and he carried out all of the usual tests and asked how things were going. After two months without seeing my consutant, he also offered to make a note on my records that I MUST see my own consultant next time I come in (thank God for that!)

Normally I'd have headed home at this point, but not today...
The doctor informed me that babies size was a concern and I was 'showing' glucose in my sample. He asked if I had been tired or thirsty and I nodded, both are also side-effects of pregnancy so I tried not to panic. The doctor advised that I would need to return to hospital for a measuring scan and a glucose test, as I may have gestational diabetes. I would need a short stint in hospital next week...

He explained that I would need to have full measurements taken at my scan. This is because the average 'fundus' measurements they take by tape measure are 1cm per week of pregnancy (give or take a couple of centimetres, so 30 weeks would equal 30cm). Which in turn means that for an average size woman (me), a full term 40 week tummy would be around 40cm right? Wrong!
I'm 33 weeks and 41cm, so I have a little bruiser growing in my tum. Go on lad!

(Thank God the rest of me has stayed relatively normal, I'd have been enormous if I'd have grown alongside my tum!)

But seriously... baby being large, alongside the 'show' of glucose means that he may need to pop out and see us even earlier than before. Gestational diabetes can result in babies being very large and having various complications. It can also harm mummies too, so my section may need to be brought forward - It all depends on the measuring scan and the glucose test next week.

Either way I just want to know when my section will be and that baby is okay, but it's a waiting game now...

I've read all of the information and I'm trying not to worry too much until I know. The problem is that I have to wait and wait to find out. I have to crawl alongside the hospital appointment system and it sucks... tick, tock.

I feel some mummy madness coming on you know. If I don't see my own consultant next week and get some answers, I think I'll go hormonal on their ass!

Keeping my chin up...
Selena x

PS - Let me know how you're feeling and how your pregnancy is going. If you're already a mum, do you have any tips for me or maybe you've had these tests and can put my mind at ease. Leave your comments...

April 28

32 Weeks

By week 32, your baby can weigh over 4 pounds! The crown-to-rump length of your baby is approximately 11.7 inches and the total length is about 18.9 inches. Your uterus is now 5 inches above your bellybutton. Some doctors do not see their patients every other week until now. So, if you were going to the doctor monthly, you may begin going once every other week now.
The baby sleeps 90-95% of the day, and sometimes experiences REM sleep (an indication of dreaming).

Now that your baby has grown so long and your uterus is higher, you might notice a new discomfort. Your baby is probably head-down and may occasionally stretch out and kick you in the ribs. The pressure on your rib cage can make you sore, especially if one of your baby's feet becomes caught. You can prevent this by sitting up straight as much as possible. Because your baby's demands for vitamins and minerals are higher than ever right now, you should continue to take your parental vitamins for the entire pregnancy.

This week your baby's movements will peak. You should continue to monitor the fetal movements daily and address any concerns with your caregiver. The wrinkles in your baby's face are disappearing and fat is still being deposited throughout the baby's body.

The body growth slows down from now on.

Because of the lack of space in the uterus, the legs are drawn up in what is known as the fetal position.

As a preparation for breastfeeding, your baby has learned to search for the breast. The baby will turn its head if touched on the cheek and open its mouth if the bottom lip is tickled. By this time the baby can also suck and swallow in a coordinated way.

Just Me & Bump

So it's 5am and it's just me and bump sat on the couch. We've made hubby his packed lunch for work, we've tidied up a bit, we've ate some raisin wheats and are now on to our second oat bar.

Having become more and more enraged by the moronic shopping ads that take over every TV channel at this time of day, both bump and I fall into the warm embrace of Paramount Comedy 1 and a Scrubs double bill... You gotta love Dr Cox!

As you have probably gathered my sleep pattern is history and my new wakey-wakey time appears to be 3am! Oh joy!

Although I'm tired, I'm trying to take solice from the fact that I feel relatively fine. PLUS the fact that my husband starts his new hours at work today, so I'm sure he'll appreciate that his packed lunch is all ready made - that'll shave a good few minutes off his prep time and mean he has extra time for a coffee, Satanta Sports News and a tummy rub before he goes...

That would be my tummy not his!

Hi Selena, I notice you did not get my last message. Sorry had a problem this end just as I sent it. Just wanted to say parent trap is really a good title I'm really snared.

I find it so fascinating reading all about how you young and older mums cope with having your babies. My babies are all grown up and have married and had babies of their own, they also think you doing a fabulous job and you keep it all so light even when in pain. You are very polite and keep thanking everyone who tries to help you. I think there should be a large vote of thanks to you for the lovely job your doing. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK and THANK YOU  for all your investigating.
A trapped by interest, young at heart parent Phyllis.
